Mud Floods

Human history has been influenced by many factors, natural and human. The human factor is riddled with facts about humans exploiting humans through Slavery, colonial subjugation of entire indigenous cultures, wars, genocide, racism, casteism etc. But the natural factors have played a much more significant role in shaping human destiny. We have been bombarded, more than once, by terrestrial objects leading to floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, landslides, and mud floods, not to discount Wars which continue to flatten and bury entire settlements. Mud floods are also caused either by excessive rainfall or a process called Liquefaction, on any type of terrain, mountainous or flat plains, and settlements close to mines, where vibrations in the earth’s crust sinks heavier materials and water rises to the surface to create mud floods. Apart from the deluge, mud floods are the cause of burial of a significant amount of human settlements especially from 1600’s and continues even today. Recovering or ‘resetting’ cities and towns in Europe and Americas are usually concealed under the guise of calling it a ‘Guilded Age’ (Popularized by Mark Twain) where the nobility and ‘Rubber Barons’ minted their millions on the backs of slaves and ‘Foundlings’ ( Children separated from their mothers – unwed mothers, prostitutes, victims of war etc) , raised in the so called orphanages and sold as slaves across England, Europe, the U.S, and Australia by the millions. There has emerged proof of mud floods which have buried our history both ancient and modern, and the following chapter is devoted to the ravages of mud floods.

It is my opinion that natural factors have, time and again, wreaked havoc upon human populations and that the earth has been turned many times over to bury both the ancient and recent human settlements and artefacts along with existing flora and fauna. We may unearth recent history buried deeper in many places while ancient artefacts surface at relatively upper levels. A tsunami has many times washed away the soil revealing very ancient structures and vice versa. It may be difficult to draw conclusions but nevertheless we can arrive at some agreement that every now and then nature has convulsed and that the earth has been ploughed over and over again. This is the scenario which exists today and we find Gobekle Tepe in Turkey, Mohenjodaro/Harappa in the Indian subcontinent, or Angkor Vat in Cambodia, or the Egyptian Sphinx, the South and Central American pyramids besides a huge number of structures, buried in mud. In recent times, Mud floods have occurred mostly from 17th century around the world and a glance into geological histories reveal them in their paintings, etchings, photographs, and living cities retrieved from those floods and resettled. They are called ‘Reset Cities’. Rather than indulging in speculation that erosion and dust storms were responsible for their burial, I find mud floods to be a more realistic explanation.

Mud floods are caused due to many reasons. Melting of mountain snows, volcanoes, earthquakes, storms etc., which are quite active, and the vibrations causes water to rise to the surface through liquefaction and consequently create mud floods.

It is significant to observe that many of our cave Architecture were freestanding monuments buried due to mud floods which solidified into some sort of stone aggregate, and later excavated ( ). Ajanta and Ellora in Maharashtra, India, seem to have suffered such a fate where you see long curved tool marks suggesting the ease with which the softer deposits of debris were excavated as against the solid hard rocks of the superstructure of the monument itself. It this be the case, then we no longer have to gasp imagining that they were hewn out of solid hard rock. It should also be noted that ancient stone technology included cutting through reflective lenses, or the use of chemicals like potassium and sulphur to melt stones ( ). The detail and three dimentionality created in stone monuments like the Temples in India suggest ‘Casting’ melted stone or some form of geopolymer aggregate. Even the casing stones of pyramids in Egypt and Bosnia are suggested to be some form of aggregate cast in-situ ( ).
